Summary

The history of the Targaryens comes to life in this Game of Thrones prequel series, House of the Dragon

Centuries before the events of A Game of Thrones, House Targaryen--the only family of dragonlords to survive the Doom of Valyria--took up residence on Dragonstone。 Fire & Blood begins their tale with the legendary Aegon the Conqueror, creator of the Iron Throne, and goes on to recount the generations of Targaryens who fought to hold that iconic seat, all the way up to the civil war that nearly tore their dynasty apart。

What really happened during the Dance of the Dragons? Why was it so deadly to visit Valyria after the Doom? What were Maegor the Cruel's worst crimes? What was it like in Westeros when dragons ruled the skies? These are but a few of the questions answered in this essential chronicle, as related by a learned maester of the Citadel。 Readers have glimpsed small parts of this narrative in such volumes as The World of Ice & Fire, but now, for the first time, the full tapestry of Targaryen history is revealed。

With all the scope and grandeur of Gibbon's The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, Fire & Blood is the first volume of the definitive two-part history of the Targaryens, giving readers a whole new appreciation for the dynamic, often bloody, and always fascinating history of Westeros。

Not bad for a fake history book。 What put me off the most about F&B was the very way it's written in; it's all 3rd person narration。 It had no life。 I know the format of the book is what makes it that way but I would have loved it if there were POV chapters just like ASOIAF, that's what breathes life into the characters and the events whereas I felt as if I was reading an elaborate wikipedia article。The main reason I picked this up was how I've always wanted to know about the famous dance of the Not bad for a fake history book。 What put me off the most about F&B was the very way it's written in; it's all 3rd person narration。 It had no life。 I know the format of the book is what makes it that way but I would have loved it if there were POV chapters just like ASOIAF, that's what breathes life into the characters and the events whereas I felt as if I was reading an elaborate wikipedia article。The main reason I picked this up was how I've always wanted to know about the famous dance of the dragons that was mentioned many times in ASOIAF, plus of course House of The Dragon was coming up so that pushed me to finally read it, and I did like the part about the dance, it was the most interesting part of the book, but I was really bored with the parts following that, I stopped at Aegon III's reign and didn't go any further than that。 (that's around 85%)I really wish these stories or at least the dance were told from the POV of the characters involved but what I want even more is for Winds of Winter to be finished and released so here's to hoping that happens xD 。。。more

Thanks to House of Dragons, I finally decided to dive into the book world of George R R Martin - who‘s been worshipped by fantasy fans for years。 To my understanding, this one is a special one and I hope does not represent his writing style。 Though for me, intrigued by the HBO series and too impatient to wait for an episode every week, this writing style proved sufficient, it certainly doesn‘t tie you to the characters in any way。 I enjoyed however, that like modern historians, the occasional di Thanks to House of Dragons, I finally decided to dive into the book world of George R R Martin - who‘s been worshipped by fantasy fans for years。 To my understanding, this one is a special one and I hope does not represent his writing style。 Though for me, intrigued by the HBO series and too impatient to wait for an episode every week, this writing style proved sufficient, it certainly doesn‘t tie you to the characters in any way。 I enjoyed however, that like modern historians, the occasional discrepancy is highlighted。 Nonetheless, the book isn‘t completely chronological which makes little sense for the setting of it。 Also, I was constantly waiting for the moment where the mad king‘s rise and fall would be described - only to find that the book doesn‘t cover that part of Targaryen history。 Quite the let down, for a book that promises the history of that family。EDIT: Apparently there‘ll be a second part covering the missing ~160 years。 Will I read it? Probably。 The intricate lore and world is just too fascinating in the end。 。。。more

This was a great read。 So fun to get back into the world I love so much as I continue to wait for Winds of Winter。 And of course I can't wait to see the epic moments in the book translate to the screen!

I enjoyed this book a lot more than I expected。 I was dreading a “history book” of Westeros, but for any fans of the book, this is surprisingly engaging for the most part。 Lots of the history here is interesting and only the immense length of the book is the downfall for me。 Occasionally I would hit a portion that didn’t engage me and it would drag, but the majority of it was very good and a better overall experience than I thought possible。 I would still only recommend to the biggest game of th I enjoyed this book a lot more than I expected。 I was dreading a “history book” of Westeros, but for any fans of the book, this is surprisingly engaging for the most part。 Lots of the history here is interesting and only the immense length of the book is the downfall for me。 Occasionally I would hit a portion that didn’t engage me and it would drag, but the majority of it was very good and a better overall experience than I thought possible。 I would still only recommend to the biggest game of thrones fans。 。。。more

Between the indefinite delay of "The Winds of Winter" and the disappointing ending of the "Game of Thrones" TV show, I've been pretty much done with the whole Song of Ice and Fire thing。But the fact is there are very few fantasy shows for adults, so I finally decided, "ugh, I'll give the 'House of the Dragon' a chance" followed by "I should probably read 'Fire and Blood' since that's what it's drawing from。"Is this the Song of Ice and Fire book I wanted? Yes。 Told in a pseudo historical narrative, "Fire and Blood" tracks the beginning of those messy, dragon-loving, incesty Targaryens from the conquering of Westeros to the immediate aftermath of the Targaryen civil war known as The Dance of Dragons。 Yes, it is definitely tricky keeping track of all these names sometimes and not every chapter is as interesting as another, but I really did like it overall。 I just tried to take this as its own thing and not let my feelings on the main series (or lack thereof) color my perception of this book。Of course, we may never get the second part of THIS book either, but y'know, I'll take what I can get。 。。。more
